Inherited from Middle English table , tabel , tabil , tabul , from Old English tabele , tabul , tablu , tabule , tabula ( “ board ” ) ; also as tæfl , tæfel , an early Germanic borrowing of Latin tabula ( “ tablet, board, plank, chart ” ) .
